What Is Grind and Shine?
Grind and shine – sometimes called grind and seal – is a two-step concrete finishing process.
First, industrial diamond tooling grinds the surface of your existing concrete, removing imperfections, old coatings and surface contamination while opening the pores of the slab. Then a penetrating or topical sealer is applied to protect the concrete and create a consistent, finished appearance. The result is a smooth, clean surface that lets the natural character of the concrete show through – aggregate, color variation, minor marks and all. It's not a blank slate. It's a finished material.
Although you might hear the term “polished concrete” used to describe this service, it is not the same as grind and shine. Polished concrete is an intensive multi-step process involving progressively finer diamond passes, polishing stones and densifier treatments – a different service at a different price point. If you've seen mirror-finish floors, that's polished concrete. Step 1
Free consultation – we visit the space, assess the concrete condition, discuss your preferences and provide an exact quote. Concrete with significant staining, prior coatings or surface damage may require additional prep work. We'll tell you upfront.
Step 2
Surface preparation – the slab is cleaned and inspected before any grinding begins. We assess moisture levels and identify any areas that need attention.
Step 3
Diamond grinding – industrial diamond tooling grinds the concrete surface, removing imperfections, opening the pores and creating a flat, consistent profile. Grinding also removes most stains and old coating residue.
Step 4
Crack filling – visible cracks are filled and smoothed as part of the process.*
Step 5
Sealer application – a penetrating or topical sealer is applied to protect the surface. Sheen level (matte, satin, or semi-gloss) is selected based on your preference and the space's use.

Grind and shine – also called grind and seal – is a process that mechanically grinds existing concrete with diamond tooling, then seals the exposed surface for a smooth, polished finish. It is a clear coat that is applied on top of the ground concrete that gives the appearance of polished concrete at an affordable rate. It transforms the concrete itself into the finished floor.

Can any concrete floor get grind and shine?
Most concrete floors can, but condition matters. The slab should be structurally sound without major spalling or deep cracks. Very new concrete (under 28 days) needs full cure time first. Blue Shield assesses your slab during the free estimate to confirm candidacy.

Minimal. Sweep regularly and damp-mop as needed – that is essentially the entire maintenance routine. No waxing, no recoating and no special cleaners required. The sealed surface resists staining and stays clean with very little effort over its lifespan.
